Prof. Li Bing

Bing Li, is a professor at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS), a PhD supervisor, and Deputy Director of the Division of Magnetic and Thermal Functional Materials. He has been awarded Distinguished Young Scholars from the National Science Fund.

After completing his PhD, Prof. Bing Li worked at the Department of Physics, University of Virginia, USA, and then at the Spallation Neutron Source of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency. Since 2018, he has been working at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Li’s research focuses on thermofunctional materials, mainly including magnetocaloric and barocaloric materials. His research features the use of large-scale facility characterization techniques, pursuing a full innovation chain of physical principles - material optimization - device design - system integration. Prof. Li discovered the colossal barocaloric effect in plastic crystals and designed the first barocaloric refrigeration prototype. In addition, he invented pressure-controllable thermal energy storage technology and discovered an alkali–rare-earth fluoride cryogenic magnetic refrigeration system with an entropy change nearly ten times greater than that of the prototype material Gd₃Ga₅O₁₂.

Prof. Li has led projects under the National Key R&D Program of China, CAS Original Innovation Program, and CAS Institutionalized Platforms, among others.
