The Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) is one of the first key institutes authorized to confer doctoral and master's degrees in China. IMR can enroll and train candidates for doctoral and masters degrees not only from China but also from abroad in materials science and engineering.

Currently, IMR has a strong instructional team for Ph.D. and M.Sc. students. There are 300 tutors, including 6 Academicians from both CAS and Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE).

IMR has an enrollment of 858 graduate students, including 541 doctoral students, 317 master students, 35 international Ph.D. graduates and 2 non-degree senior scholars. There are also about 50 postdoctoral fellows and 43 master students who are on professional leave studying in major of materials engineering.

IMR is a high-level institute and well equipped with advanced scientific research facilities. It provides students with a wide range of research areas, a well-experienced tutoring team, a good learning environment adequate research funds and comfortable living environment. Many types of scholarships and fellowships, including the Graduate Student Scholarship, Assistant Research Fellowship, Shi Changxu Scholarship and several kinds of International Student Scholarships have been set up at IMR.

Graduate students at IMR have the opportunity to participate in research projects under the direct guidance of their tutors to explore the frontiers of scientific research and attend academic meetings. 28 graduate students have been awarded the Special Prize of the President of CAS, and 18 doctoral students have been awarded the CAS Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Award. IMR is one of the leading educational organizations that have won the most awards in materials science and engineering in China.
