Jointly hosted by the British Embassy Beijing and the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, UK-IMR Advanced Materials Seminar: Advanced Materials and Manufacturing was held in IMR on 22th Oct. 2014.
The seminar was hosted by Prof. ZHANG Jian, Deputy Director of IMR. Ms. Holly White, the counsellor of British Embassy Beijing introduced the research progress in UK and the positive attitude from British government in scientific innovation and the cooperation policy with China. She specially mentioned the background and application requirement of Newton Fund. Prof. YANG Rui, Director of IMR, brief the key research area in IMR and the cooperation with UK. Besides, Ms. ZHANG Ling, Deputy Inspector and Mr. CHEN Hongyu, head of foreign affair office of Shenyang Science and Technology Bureau, attended the seminar.
Dr. LIU Yufei of Swansea University, Prof. ZHU Yanqiu of University of Exeter and Mr. Tim Ringrose of Cranfield University introduced their own research area and the progress of their universities at seminar. The participants discussed about some interested topics concerning nanodevice, functional materials, Antibacterial metals, aeronautical materials and advanced manufacturing engineering. Both parties also exchanged the experience of the application for UK-China cooperation fund. Mr. Tom de Fonblanque, second secretary of British Embassy, Ms. HE Tingting, Prof. Mike Loretto of University of Birmingham, and some IMR researchers in relevant field also attended the seminar.
After the seminar, the participants visited Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science and the relevant labs in Titanium Alloys Division.
Recent years, IMR achieved lots of successful cooperation with the British academic institution like University of Birmingham, University of Hertfordshire, Queen’s University Belfast, University of Edinburgh, Loughborough University and key enterprises like Rolls-Royce and BP. There have been nine scientists from Britain honored with LEE HSUN Lecture Series Award since IMR established it in 2001, which efficiently enhanced the exchange and collaboration between materials research scientists of two parties.
UK in Shenyang Week (from 14th to 26th, Oct. 2014) are hosted by the British Embassy Beijing, the China Britain Business Council and the Shenyang Municipal Government. It aims to promote UK-Shenyang cooperation and introduce the Shenyang public to UK strengths in sport, the arts, retail, manufacturing, urban design, education, science and more. UK-IMR Advanced Materials Seminar is the only academic one among 18 events.
In the opening ceremony of UK in Shenyang Week, Prof. YANG Rui was invited by Sir Sebastian Wood, the British Ambassador to China to the press conference.
