Dr. Robert D. Shull,National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) USA, the recipient of 2006 Lee Hsun Lecture Series on Materials Science, visited the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR CAS), from 29 to 31, Oct. 2006.
During his visit, Dr. Shull gave a lecture entitled: Nanomagnetisn: A new materials frontier, and held a friendly meeting with Director, Prof. Ke Lu. He also held fruitful discussions with scientists and graduate students from several groups working on nano magnetic materials, advanced ceramics, materials fatigue and fracture and solid atomic area.
Dr. Robert D. Shull graduated from MIT in June 1968, obtained his Master and Ph.D degrees at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. From November 1979 to the present Dr. Shull has been a member of the staff of the Metallurgy Division at the NIST. Dr. Shull has authored and co-authored over 150 publications, edited 5 books and 6 special scientific journal issues, received 2 patents, and presented over 275 talks (220 invited) at professional meetings in the areas of magnetism, superconductivity, phase equilibrium, rapid solidification, and nanocomposites. One of these papers appeared on the cover of Science magazine (Jan. 8, 1988). Dr. Shull is a member of TMS, ASM, APS, IEEE, ASTM, and Sigma Xi. In TMS(The Minerals, Metals and Materials Society) he is the Vice President. Owing to his outstand contributions, he has been granted various honorable awards. Dr. Shull is also the son of Dr. Clifford G. Shull, the winner of the 1994 NOBEL PRIZE in PHYSICS.
