Prof. Gary L. Messing, Pennsylvania State University, USA, the recipient of 2008 Lee Hsun Lecture Series, visited Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science, from 7 to 10, June. 2009.
During his visit, Professor Messing delivered a lecture entitled: “Seeding and Templated Grain Growth for Control of Phase Formation,Microstructure, and Properties of Piezoelectric and Structural Ceramics”. After the lecture, he held discussions with scientists and graduate students of the SYNL. Professor Messing was also invited to visit some of the SYNL laboratories.
Dr. Gary L. Messing is Distinguished Professor of Ceramic Science and Engineering and Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Pennsylvania State University.
Professor Messing has received numerous awards for his research and leadership in the field of ceramics including the Richard M. Fulrath Pacific Award, the International Award of the European Ceramic Society for his international collaborations, the Outstanding Educator Award of the Ceramic Education Council of ACerS, etc.. He was elected Fellow of the American Ceramic Society in 1990 and served on the Board of Directors for many years and was then elected President of the American Ceramic Society. He has published over 250 papers and co-edited 13 books on various aspects of ceramic processing including solution synthesis, phase transformations, processing-microstructure relations, sintering and templated grain growth. He was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Materials Research in 2009.
