Professor Jeff Th. M. De Hosson of the Department of Applied Physics, University of Groningen, Netherlands, the recipient of 2010 Lee Hsun Lecture Series, was invited to visit the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science (SYNL) from 11th to14th July 2010.
Prof. Ke Lu, Director of the IMR, had a friendly meeting with Professor Hosson, gave a briefing on the status of the IMR. Professor Hosson delivered a lecture with the title of “In situ microscopy of nano-sized materials: challenges and opportunities”. The lecturing session was chaired by Prof. Zhefeng Zhang, Head of Materials Fatigue and Fracture Division of the SYNL, who also presented an Honorary Lecture Certificate of the Lee Hsun Lecture Series of IMR to Prof. Hosson. During his stay in the SYNL, Professor Hosson was also invited to tour the relevant divisions of the SYNL, and had in-depth discussions with the SYNL professors.
Professor Hosson graduated from the University of Groningen in Applied Physics. He was appointed professor in applied physics by the Crown at the University of Groningen in 1977. He has been the Chairman of the Department of Applied Physics of the University of Groningen since 1985. His research focuses on electron microscopy, dislocation dynamics, and interface science related to surface engineering. He published more than 780 scientific publications. He is member of the “The Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities”, of the “Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences” (KNAW) division physics and vice -chairman of the council Physics and Astronomy of the KNAW. In 2002 he was elected Fellow of the American Society for Metals (FASM), followed by the Acta Materialia Inc award in 2003. He received the European Materials Gold Medal of the Federation of European Materials Societies (FEMS).
