At the invitation of the Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Prof. Narayan from the North Carolina State University visited IMR from Jul. 18th to Jul. 21st, as a recipient of 2011 Lee Hsun Lecture Award.
During the visit, Prof. LU Ke, the Director of IMR, Prof. CHENG Huiming and Prof. YANG Rui, the Deputy Directors of IMR had meetings with Prof. Narayan separately. The Lee Hsun Lecture Award Conferring Ceremony was presided over by Prof. LU Ke on Jul.20th, Prof. CHENG Huiming presented the plaque of Lee Hsun Research Award to Prof. Narayan. After the ceremony, Prof. Naranyan delivered a lecture entitled “Frontiers in Nanostructured Materials for Next-generation Nanotechnology”, the excellent lecture received high attention and praise. Prof. Narayan answered the audience’s questions and had an academic discussion with many researchers in relevant fields.
Prof. Narayan also visited the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science (SYNL), and had academic discussions with many research divisions, including Non-equilibrium Metallic Materials Division, Materials Fatigue and Fracture Division, Advanced Carbon Division, Magnetism and Magnetic Materials Division and High-performance Ceramics Division.
Prof. Narayan is the Distinguished University Professor of North Carolina State University (NCSU) (Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering and Physics) and the Director of Center for Advanced Materials and Smart Structures. Prof. Narayan once severed the National Science Foundation of USA as director of the Materials Research division. He has a high reputation for the preparation of functional thin film materials by laser, and has done a lot of original work in the understanding of non ionic crystal defects and diffusion, the preparation of saturated semiconductor alloys, pulsed laser deposition of high temperature superconducting thin films. Prof. Narayan is the fellow of TMS、APS、 AAAS、ASM and MRS., and also the India Academy of Science academician. Prof. Narayan got many awards, including 2004 Edward DeMille Campbell Lecture and ASM Campbell Prize, DOE (Div. of Materials Sciences) Award for Outstanding Research (1981), IR-100 Award (1979) for Laser Diffused p-n Junctions and Devices; IR-100 Award (1981) for Novel Supersaturated Semiconductor Alloys; IR-100 Award (1982) for New Nanocrystalline Metal-Ceramic Composites,2001 ASM-International Best Paper Award, EMSA – Best Paper Award (1994), the 2011 Acta Materialia Inc. and the Gold medal in 2011.
