At the invitation of the Institute of Metal Research (IMR), Prof. Philippe Marcus, from ENSCP Chimie ParisTech and CNRS, visited IMR from Jul. 23rd to Jul. 26th, as a recipient of 2012 Lee Hsun Research Award.
During the visit, Prof. Philippe Marcus delivered a lecture entitled “Micro and Nanoscale Investigation of the Interactions of Metal Surfaces with Gaseous and Liquid Environments: Experimental and Theoretical Approach”, the lecture was presided over by Prof. HAN Enhou. Before the lecture, Prof. YANG Rui, the director of IMR, presented the plaque of Lee Hsun Lecture Award to Prof. Philippe Marcus. Prof. Marcus also visited the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science (SYNL) and Environmental Corrosion Research Centre.
Prof. Philippe Marcusis the Director of Research at CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) and Director of the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Surfaces at Ecole Nationale Supérieure de Chimie de Paris, France. His research field is surface chemistry, surface electrochemistry, and corrosion science, with emphasis on the understanding of the structure and properties of metal and alloy surfaces.
Prof. Marcus has published over 300 papers in scientific journals, books and conference proceedings in the areas of corrosion science, surface chemistry and electrochemistry, surface analysis and materials science, plus two books “Corrosion Mechanisms in Theory and Practice” and "Analytical Methods in Corrosion Science and Engineering”. He has given over 90 invited lectures at International Conferences. He serves on the editorial board of five major journals in Electrochemistry and Corrosion: Electrochimica Acta, Corrosion Science, Materials and Corrosion, Corrosion Engineering, Science, and Technology, and Corrosion Reviews. Prof. Marcus has received a number of awards and honors, including the 2005 Uhlig Award from the Electrochemical Society, the 2008 Whitney Award from NACE International, the Cavallaro Medal of the European Federation of Corrosion in 2008, and the 2010 U. R. Evans Award of the Institute of Corrosion (UK). He was an elected Fellow of the Electrochemical Society (2005) and of the International Society of Electrochemistry (2009).
Prof. Marcus was the Chairman of two divisions of the International Society of Electrochemistry: Electrodeposition, Corrosion and Surface Treatments, and Electrochemical Materials Science.Currently, he is appointed as the President of the European Federation of Corrosion, Chairman of the EFC Working Party on Surface Science and Mechanisms of Corrosion and Protection, Chairman of the International Steering Committee for the European Conferences on Applications of Surface and Interface Analysis, Chairman of the Scientific and Technical Committee of CEFRACOR (Centre Français de l’Anticorrosion) and he is on the Board of Administrators of the World Corrosion Organization as well.
