At the invitation of the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS), Professor Gunther Eggeler, Chair for Materials Science, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, visited IMR from Apr. 22nd to 25th and conducted academic exchanges, as a recipient of 2012 Lee Hsun Lecture Awards.
Professor Gunther Eggeler is a well-acknowledged scientist for his influencing research in the field of martensitic transformation, shape memory alloy and the creep behavior of Superalloys. During the visit, Professor Eggeler delivered a lecture for the research staff and graduates titled “Basics of Shape Memory Alloys and the Role of Fatigue in NiTi Shape Memory Technology”. Before the lecture, Professor ZHANG Jian, the deputy director of IMR, presented the plaque of Lee Hsun Lecture Awards to Professor Eggeler. The awarding ceremony and lecture followed was presided over by Professor ZHANG Zhefeng, the deputy director of IMR. After the lecture, Professor Eggeler visited the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science and formed a deep academic discussion on phase transformation and microscopic deformation mechanism with the research staff in Materials Fatigue and Fracture Division and Superalloys Division. During the discussion, Professor Eggeler also introduced the Collaborative Research Centre on Single Crystal Super Alloys SFB/Transregio 103 funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG.
Professor Eggeler is the director of Department of Materials Science, Ruhr-University Bochum, Germany. He is the chief scientist of a Collaborative Research Centre on Shape Memory Technology SFB 459, and a Collaborative Research Centre on Single Crystal Super Alloys SFB/Transregio 103, both funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG. He is also the chairman of International Scientific Committee of the International Conference of Strength of Metals and Alloys.Professor Eggeler won Tammann Medal 2005 from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Materialkunde (DGM) and was elected a member of the North Rhine Westfalian Academy of Sciences in 2008. Besides, Professor Eggeler was the editorial board member of numerous international academic journals such as Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A、Advanced Engineering Materials and Japanese Materials Transactions. He has published more than 300 papers on the top academic journals. He also performed as the chairman and gave invited lectures in numerous international conferences.
