At the invitation of Professor LU Ke, the recipient of 2013 Lee Hsun Lecture Awards,Professor William D Nix from Stanford University, visited IMR from Jun 17th to 18th. Prof. Nix is the academician of United States National Academy of Sciences (NAS), National Academy of Engineering (NAE) and American Academy of Arts and Sciences. During the visit, Professor Nix was accompanied by Professor GAO Huajian from Brown University and Professor QU Shaoxing, the deputy Director of Institute of Applied Mechanics, Zhejiang University.
Lee Hsun Lecture Awarding Ceremony was held on Jun 18th and presided over by Prof. LU Ke. Prof. YANG Rui, the director of IMR, presented the plaque of Lee Hsun Lecture Awards to Prof. Nix. After the ceremony, Professor Nix delivered a lecture for the research staff and graduates titled “Fracture of Silicon Nanopillars during Electrochemical Lithium Insertion”. During the lecture, Prof. Nix introduced the mechanism and influencing factors of silicon nanopillars fracture during electrochemical lithium insertion, and the application prospect of this study in the design of silicon electrodes for advanced battery systems. The lecture aroused great interest in participating research staff and graduates. After the lecture, Prof. Nix answered the audience’s questions and had an academic discussion with researchers in relevant fields. During the visit, Prof. YANG Rui, the director of IMR, introduced the general situation of IMR to Prof. Nix, including the research fields and postgraduate training, etc. Professor Nix also was invited to visit the Shenyang National Laboratory for Materials Science (SYNL)
Professor Nix is a top scientist in the field of international materials and solid mechanics field. Since the 60s of last century, he has received a great reputation in the fields of the failure of high temperature creep and fracture of metals. His study on the characterization technique of thin film materials, the growth mechanism, microstructure evolution, mechanical properties and deformation mechanism of thin film is pioneering, and achieved many original innovations. Especially, he established the method system of thin films mechanical properties, which has laid the foundation for the research of thin film material, as well as its application and development in microelectronic devices. Besides, he has also made a series of achievements on the relationship between the structure and mechanical behavior of nanometer materials and lithium ion batteries.
Professor Nix has been acknowledged by almost every important award and honor in the fields of interantional materials and mechanics, including the TMS’s Robert Franklin Mehl award, the Edward DeMille Campbell Memorial award of ASM, the TMS’s Educator Award, the gold medal of ASM, the gold medal of Acta Metallurgica, the Nadai medal of ASME, and the Albert Sauveur achievement award of ASM. He has published more than 450 papers, been cited more than twenty thousand times. He has also trained 78 doctors, including many Chinese scientists be active in the field of international material field and solid mechanics. Prof. Nix has made outstanding contributions to both the science and the society.
