SHAN Yating, LUO Xinghong, HU Xiaoqiang and LIU Shi from Materials for Special Environment Division and Materials Process Modeling Division were honored with Stainless Steel Anniversary Medal by Brazilian mining company, Companhia Brasileira de Metallurgia e Mineração (CBMM) for their excellent paper “Mechanisms of solidification structure improvement of ultra pure 17wt.%Cr ferritic stainless steel by Ti, Nb addition” (Journal of Materials Science & Technology, 2011 Vol. 27 (04): 352-358). Prof. LUO Xinghong received the medal on behalf of his group of researchers at a ceremony that formed part of the Harry Brearley Stainless Steel Centenary Conference and Exhibition held in Sheffield in June.
This unique and prestigious award was set up to mark the milestones of the centenary of the birth of stainless steel and the eightieth anniversary of the first use of niobium to enhance the properties of stainless steels, and presented with the Stainless Steel Anniversary Medal to the authors of the technical paper that has made the most significant contribution to the increased understanding of the important role of niobium as an alloying element, in any class of stainless steel.
The winning paper was chosen, on behalf of CBMM, by a peer review panel of international experts led by Beta Technology to be the best paper on the benefits of niobium in stainless steels published in the preceding 18 months.
