A celebration of the Rolls-Royce China 50th Anniversary was held in Beijing on the 20th of August. Dr YANG Rui, director of IMR, was invited to attend this occasion and participated in the innovation forum Making the Future.
John Rishton, CEO of Rolls-Royce, and Patrick Horgan, Northeast Asia Regional Director, delivered welcome speeches at the ceremony. They reviewed the history of Rolls-Royce in China in the past 50 years since the delivery of the first Dart engine powered Viscount Vickers into China in 1963 and its involvement in China’s development in the civil aviation, marine engineering and energy sectors. Ric Parker, director of Global Research and Technology of Rolls-Royce, delivered a keynote address Innovation in Rolls-Royce, reviewing the key advances in designing method, new materials, new processes and modern management, and how these factors help improve the quality of Rolls-Royce products. He highlighted in particular the key role IMR research played in developing a new process of manufacturing titanium aluminide LPT blades, a key technology supporting a new generation of civil aircraft engines.
An innovation forum featuring the theme Making the Future and consisting of two panel discussions ensued after the ceremony. Dr YANG Rui was a panelist in the theme discussion Managing Innovation from R&D to Commercialized Products and Services, moderated by Ric Parker. Dr Yang took the R&D of LPT blades as an example and shared his view and opinion with more than 120 participants of the forum on how to effectively organise resources to deliver high value R&D, how to encourage basic research aimed at solving industrial process problems, how to promote application focused research in new materials and new processes, and how to achieve innovation in an unfavourable environment.
Dr CUI Yuyou, a member of the titanium aluminide LPT blade team, was also invited to the ceremony.
