LEE HSUN Lecture Award Winner Prof. Ronald G. Ballinger, Dr. Peter L. Andresen Visit IMR

2013-10-29

The Recipient of Lee Hsun Lecture Awards in 2013, Prof. Ronald G. Ballinger, from Massachusetts Institute Technology (MIT) and the Recipient of Lee Hsun Research Award in 2011, Dr. Peter Andresen, the Chief Scientist of Corrosion and Electrochemistry Laboratory of GE Global Center, visited IMR from Sept. 9th to Sept.18th.

During the visit, Prof. Ballinger delivered a lecture titled “The Role of Crack Tip Chemistry and Microstructure on Toughness and Crack Propagation in LWR Environments”. Before the lecture, Prof.ZHANG Jian, the deputy director of IMR, presented the plaque of Lee Hsun Lecture Awards to Prof. Ronald G. Ballinger. Environmentally assisted degradation of structural materials in Light Water Reactor (LWR) systems is a critical issue for life extension in LWR systems. In spite of generally good performance there have been a number of significant failures including stress corrosion cracking or fatigue of steam generator tubing, Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) piping cracking, Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and BWR dissimilar metal weld cracking and high strength material stress corrosion cracking. It is likely that long term operation, with increased radiation exposure will result in additional environmental degradation issues. In this lecture, Prof. Ballinger explore the dependence of environmental degradation on microstructure and crack tip chemistry. With the development of high resolution analytical electron microscopy and 3D atom probe tomographic techniques in combination with vastly improved capabilities in modeling and simulation we are at a near-critical point where the resolution of analytical electron probe microscopy and the volume of material that can be modeled are of the same dimension. The advent of this convergence allows for greatly improved understanding of the fundamental peocesses.

As the gainer of LEE HSUN Series Continued Support program, Dr. Peter Andresen delivered a lecture of “Perspective on SCC of Structural Materials in Hot Water”. In recent years, focusing on nuclear-power-station-used materials like stainless steel and ultratek, Dr. Andresen has devoted himself to stress corrosion under high temperature and high pressure water from nuclear power. He achieved the first results in crack growth, especially in low velocity crack in the world. In addition, he has a distinctive quality in the technology of simulating nuclear power environment experiment. In

During the visit, Prof. Ballinger and Dr. Andresen also attended 3th International Symposium on Materials and Reliability in Nuclear Power Plants, co-sponsored by IMR and China Nuclear Energy Association as invited speaker.

Prof. Ronald Ballinger is a specialist in the field of failure analysis. His areas of specialization are materials selection and engineering of nuclear engineering systems and environmental degradation and life assessment of these systems. He is also Head of the H.H. Uhlig Corrosion Laboratory in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at MIT.In recent years, Prof. Ballinger mainly focuses on the reliable assessment of vapor generator. He analyzed the Davis Besse Nuclear Power Accident and BMI Nuclear Craze Accident and is appointed the councilor of Nuclear Reactor Safety, the United State Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Prof. Ballinger has authored or co-authored more than 100 scientific publications and he is also a member of several professional societies including the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, The American Society for Metals, The Electrochemical Society, The American Nuclear Society, and the American Society for Testing and Materials. Prof. Ballinger is currently Vice Chair/Chair-Elect of the Materials Science and Technology Division of the American Nuclear Society.

Dr. Andresen’s expertise is in the area of corrosion and environmental effects on mechanical properties and integrity of materials. His research has focused on corrosion and environmental fracture of iron- and nickel-base alloys under conditions of interest to the energy and plastics industries. He also studied corrosion fatigue of Cu-Al alloys and has published and consulted widely on pitting, general corrosion, erosion and polarization behavior in aqueous and organic media. In addition to numerous presentations of his research, Dr. Andresen has given many invited lectures at technical and educational symposia.

Prior to GE, Dr. Andresen worked as an independent consultant specializing in corrosion and metallurgical failure analysis. Dr. Andresen is the author of over 400 publications, holds twenty eight patents, has given dozens of invited talks and written numerous chapters for books. He is a Fellow of the American Society for Metals and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers, and is a member of the International Cooperative Groups on Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking and on Environmentally Assisted Cracking. He has served in many capacities in professional societies, including currently on the Board of Directors of NACE; Board of Editors for Corrosion Journal; Chairman of the NACE Research Committee; NACE Awards Committee, Advisory Panel / Quick Response Team for Halden, Norway and MIT test reactor programs; and various as head of various committees and symposia for NACE, the Environmental Degradation meetings, the International Cooperative Group on Irradiation Assisted SCC; and ASM.
