Prof. José L. Figueiredo from the University of Porto visited the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) on 1st to 5th Dec. 2014 as the recipient of 2014 LEE HSUN Lecture Series—Research Award.
After the ceremony hosted by Prof. SU Dangsheng, head of Catalysis and Energy Materials Division, IMR, Prof. José L. Figueiredo gave a lecture entitled “Carbon materials as metal-free catalysts”. He discussed about the surface chemical properties of carbon materials, the nature and concentration of functional groups on the carbon surface and carbon catalysis gas phase with the researchers of Catalysis and Energy Materials Division.
Prof. José L. Figueiredo’s interest research areas are heterogeneous catalysis, nanostructured carbon materials, chemical and catalytic reaction engineering. He did excellent work specially in the application of catalysis with activated carbon and commercial carbon blacks. He is the first scientist who found out the relationship between the surface of chemical property and gas phase oxidative dehydrogenation, and also established their microreaction mechanism. Prof. José L. Figueiredo was the president of the Portuguese Chemical Society from 2007-2009, a member of the Executive Board of ACENET (ERA-NET on Applied Catalysis) 2004-2009.Furthermore, he is also the member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journals CARBON (since 1998), Fuel Processing Technology (since 2003) and Periodica Polytechnica – Chemical Engineering, Budapest (since 2003).He has published over 230 papers and one has been sited for more than 1000 times which is one of the most sited papers in Portuguese scientific areas.
