Prof. Martin Stratmann, the President of Max Planck Society, was invited to visit Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) from April 21 to 23, 2015, as the recipient of LEE Hsun Lecture Series—Lecture Award.

Prof. YANG Rui, the Director of IMR received Prof. Stratmann and the group, and introduced the general information of IMR. Prof. Stratmann endorsed development program of IMR and CAS, and expressed the intention for future cooperation.

In the ceremony of LEE Hsun Lecture Series, Prof. Stratmann gave a lecture of “Coatings for corrosion protection: From the basics to new challenges”, in which he elaborated the important role of coatings and the research process of self-healing coating technology. He made a discussion with Prof. HAN Enhou, the Director of National Engineering Center for Corrosion Control, and Director of Key Laboratory of Nuclear Materials and Safety Assessment of CAS, and then had a laboratory tour.

Together with Prof. Martin Stratmann, Prof. Dr. Sebastian Höpfner, the Scientific Officer of Division for International Relations and Ms. Milda Krasauskaite, the Personal Assistant to the President also attended the visit. They met Prof. BAI Chunli, the President of CAS in Beijing on April 20, 2015.

Prof. Stratmann has gained considerable experience of research policy in his positions as Chairperson of the Chemistry, Physics and Technology Section from 2006 to 2008 and as Vice President of the Max Planck Society from 2008. He invented the technique of using scanning kelvin probe to explore the hidden interface in corrosion science and self-healing polymer coating. He also explained the stability mechanisms of metal-polymer interface, and clarified the atmospheric corrosion mechanism of iron and steel. Furthermore he studied electrochemistry on the ultrathin electrolyte covered the metal surface earlier in relevant field. Prof. Martin Stratmann is a fellow of the Electrochemical Society and a member of Acatech and the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences.
