Prof. Thaddeus B. Massalksi of Carnegie Mellon University Visits IMR

2015-06-18

The recipient of 2013 Lee Hsun Lecture Series—Lecture Award, Prof. Thaddeus B. Massalksi of Carnegie Mellon University visited Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) from May 31 to July 2, 2015.

In the lecture of “Phase Diagrams: Yesterday, today and tomorrowThermodynamics, Compilations, Low Temperatures, Errors, Modeling and Opportunities”, Prof. Massalski introduced the history of phase diagram and his research experience in the relevant field.

At the seminar with young researchers and students of Non-equilibrium Metallic Materials Division and Materials Process Modeling Division, Prof. Massalski had extensive discussion and exchanges over some interesting topics. He suggested them always to be curious and adventurous about science, and to keep precise when doing research.

Prof. Massalski is Emeritus Professor of Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Carnegie Mellon University. He made great contribution in alloy phase transformation, thermodynamics, phase transformation, phase stability, non-crystalline material and magnetic materials. He is the foreign member of Polish Academy of Sciences and German Academy of Sciences. His book “Structure of Metals” co-authored with others, has been translated into eight languages with more than fifty thousand sold globally. In 1969, Prof. Massalski was appointed as editor of “Progress in Material Science” which has the highest impact factor among reviewed journals of materials science.

Besides, Prof. Massalski has received many awards including Hume-Rothery Award of AIME in 1980, Hume-Rothery Prize, British Institute of Metals in 1989, ASM International Gold Medal in 1993, Acta Metallurgica Gold Medal in 1995, Sendzimir Prize, PIASA, New York in 1998, Losana Gold Medal in 2003, Czochralski Prize in 2006 Japan Institute of Metals Gold Medal in 2010 and Willard Gibbs Award and Symposium in 2012.
