The recipient of 2016 Lee Hsun Lecture Series—Lee Hsun Young Scientist Lecture Series on Materials Science, Dr. Shen J Dillon from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign visited Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) from May 3 to 8, 2016.

During the visit, Dr. Shen J Dillon delivered lectures of “Atomic Transport in Crystalline Alloys in Extreme Environments” and “In-situ Characterization of Reaction Mechanisms and Degradation Processes in Energy Conversion and Storage Systems”. He demonstrated the research in characterizing local strain effects in high capacity Li-ion anode materials during cycling and deformation in low density nanostructures. He also presented model experiments to quantify concentration and production rate under shearing which provide new insights into how to process novel nanostructured materials and the crucial role of non-equilibrium processes in dominating the materials response.

Shen J. Dillon is Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Focusing on revealing the atom global property from a micro standpoint, he has made some breakthroughs in the research of structural characterization and application of energy nanostructured materials. He has been rewarded for his contribution several times such as the 2011 Department of Energy Early Career Award, the 2013 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and the 2015 American Ceramic Society’s Robert L. Coble Award for Young Scholars.
