April 24, 2017 marks the date of the ninth International Corrosion Awareness Day (ICAD), started by the World Corrosion Organization (WCO). A series of ICAD activities were host by Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) etc. in Shenyang.

Corrosion is a pervasive problem that costs 3% or more of GDP and a menace adversely impacting various industry sectors including infrastructure utilities, transportation, oil and gas etc. The damage that corrosion costs is much more severe than the sum of all kinds of natural disaster like windstorm, fire, flood and earthquake.

ICAD is set up to educate public, industries and government of the impact of corrosion on people, economies and the environment, and what can be done to prevent and control it.

More than 2000 delegates/students from various institutes and schools participated in the events featured as lectures, experiments, exhibitions and science quiz contests etc.

Eminent scientists like Prof. KE Wei, the Academician of CAS and Prof. HAN Enhou, the president of WCO, the director of CAS Shenyang Branch, and the director of Environment Corrosion Research Center, IMR, CAS, both delivered lectures on corrosion and its control and corrosion studies.

To enlighten the impact of corrosion and motivate young researchers to pursue corrosion research, IMR designed a 2-day science camp with the theme of “Walking into the Corrosion World, Building up a healthy lifestyle” for students from multiple high schools in Shenyang. Students got involved in the corrosion experiments with young scientists.

CAS Shenyang Branch also held a workshop on corrosion achievements with the Science and Technology Department of Liaoning Province, participated by research scientists, application specialists, technicians and consultants from steel industries, power plant, and transportation industries etc. Sustainable solutions were proposed and discussed during the events.
