Invited by Prof. HAN Enhou, Dr. R. Winston Revie from CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory, visited Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) from October 19 to 20, 2017.

During the visit, Dr. Revie delivered two lectures entitled “Stress Corrosion Crack Initiation in Linepipe Steels” and “Effects of Cathodic Protection on Cracking of High-Strength Pipeline Steels”. Dr. Revie introduced the stress corrosion cracking of pipeline steel material under different influence circumstances. He also discussed the stress corrosion cracking caused by hydrogen and its cathodic protection. He also demonstrated a self-designed software to conduct the failure analysis prediction.

Dr. Revie visited the CAS Key Laboratory of Nuclear Materials and Safety Assessment, IMR and Zhongke Engineering Research Center for Corrosion Control, Shenyang during his visit. He also conducted academic exchanges with Academician KE Wei of IMR.

Dr. Revie retired from the CANMET Materials Technology Laboratory, Ottawa, Canada, in 2011, after 33 years as a scientist, project leader, and program manager for pipeline technology. He is a Past President of the Metallurgical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum, a Past President of the NACE Foundation of Canada, and a Past Director of NACE International.

Dr. Revie’s primary focus lies in the integrity research of buried pipeline and he provides solid theory support for service safety of pipeline. He received the Distinguished Technical Achievement Award of NACE International in 2004 and has received Fellow honors from CIM (1999), NACE International (1999), ASM International (2003), and The Electrochemical Society (2012) among other awards for his work. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 reference papers and technical reports and was the editor ofUhlig’s Corrosion Handbook, 2nd and 3rd editions (Wiley, 2000 and 2011), and he co-authored the 3rd and 4th editions of Corrosion and Corrosion Control (Wiley, 1985 and 2008).
