The recipient of 2017 Lee Hsun Lecture Series—Lee Hsun Lecture Award, Prof. Alan Turnbull from National Physical Laboratory, UK , visited Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) from November 14 to 17, 2017.
During the visit, Prof. Urban delivered a lecture entitled “Characterising the early stages of crack development in environmentally assisted cracking”. He gave an an overview of corrosion research to characterise the early stages of crack development in environment assisted cracking, focusing particularly on pitting, the pit-to-crack transition, and the measurement of crack growth rate in the small and long crack growth regime in his lecture.
Prof. Turnbull is a Senior NPL Fellow in Electrochemistry and Corrosion and a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). He works as a corrosion scientist/engineer with specialist expertise in the measurement and modelling of environment-assisted cracking and the localised corrosion of metals.
Prof. Turnbull is renowned for his mathematical modeling of corrosion processes, particularly the complex interaction between mass transport and chemical and electrochemical reactions in the restricted geometries of cracks, crevices and pits. His work provides the scientific foundation for understanding and predicting the effect of environmental variables on environment assisted fracture, and for controlling localized corrosion in a wide range of industrial applications, including oil and gas, marine, chemical and nuclear engineering. He has been the principal author of ten international standards.
Prof. Turnbull is a recipient of the the Cavallaro Medal from the European Federation of Corrosion; the UR Evans Award from the Institute of Corrosion and the Whitney Award from NACE International.
He was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2011 and Fellow of the Royal Society in 2013. In 2016, he was awarded the OBE for services to science and industry.
