Activities to popularize Worldwide Corrosion Day were host by Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) etc. in Shenyang, on April 25, 2018.
Initiated by the World Corrosion Organization, each year’s April 24 marks the International Corrosion Awareness Day (ICAD).
With the theme of “Attention on Corrosion Damage, Building up livable city”, ICAD attracted more than 2,000 people in the activities, including science reports, exhibitions, experiments, and science quiz contests etc. showing people the bad influences of corrosion and raising their awareness to prevent and control corrosion.
Prof. HAN Enhou from IMR, president of the World Corrosion Organization, made a report, pointing out that corrosion not only pollutes the environment but also threatens people’s health, such as rusty iron pans and faucets in the kitchen.
However, if used properly, corrosion can also benefit people, such as degradable fixation devices in the bones, which disappear due to corrosion, said Han.
People’s awareness of preventing and controlling corrosion still needs to be improved, added Han.
To enlighten the impact of corrosion and motivate young researchers to pursue corrosion research, IMR designed a science camp for students from Liaoning Province Shiyan High School. Students conducted experiments with young scientists to learn more about corrosion.
During the activities, exhibitions on corrosion application, corrosion prevention, and knowledge about nuclear power were also be available.
ICAD is set up to educate public, industries and government of the impact of corrosion on people, economies and the environment, and what can be done to prevent and control it.
