IMR Alumnus Prof. Daolun Chen Elected as Fellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada

Prof. Daolun Chen, an alumnus of Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS) and a Tenured Professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada. The announcement was made by the Royal Society of Canada (RSC) on Septmenber 4. Previously, he was elected as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE) in 2017 and as a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (MEASA) in 2021.

Born in Chongqing, China, in 1963, Prof. Daolun Chen earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the Northeast Institute of Technology (now Northeastern University).  He completed his PhD in in Metallic Materials and Heat Treatment at IMR in 1989, under the supervision of three advisors: Academician SHI Changxu, Prof. WANG Zhongguang, and Prof. JIANG Xiaoxia. He later obtained a second Ph.D. from the University of Vienna, Austria in 1993. Prof. Chen is currently a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (FCAE), a Member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts (MEASA), a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (FAAAS), a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM) in the UK, a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (FCIM), a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (FCSME), and a Fellow of the Canadian Welding Bureau Association (FCWBA).

Prof. Daolun Chen has published more than 540 peer-reviewed papers on deformation, fatigue, and welding of advanced materials and critical engineering materials. He has also authored more than 250 non-peer-reviewed conference papers and research reports. Since 2019, he has been consistently ranked among the world's top 2% of scientists by Stanford University. His numerous accolades include the International Magnesium Lifetime Achievement Award, the Ontario Premier's Research Excellence Award, the MetSoc Research Excellence Award, the MetSoc Distinguished Scientist Award, the Sarwan Sahota Distinguished Scholar Award, the Canadian Metal Physics Award, the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering G.H. Duggan Medal, and the Ontario Professional Engineers Awards (OPEA) Engineering Medal for Research and Development. He also holds editorial roles for 28 international journals, including Journal of Magnesium and Alloys, Journal of Materials Science and Technology, and Materials Science and Engineering A. Additionally, he has been invited to provide expert commentary on research published in leading journals such as Nature and Science.
