The Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS), and the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) co-hosted a bilateral workshop on energy materials in Changwon, Korea, from November 4 to 5, 2025. The event aimed to strengthen scientific exchange and foster collaborative innovation in cutting-edge energy technologies.
Led by IMR Director Prof. LIU Gang, the Chinese delegation joined Korean counterparts in discussing recent advances and future trends in materials science for energy applications. In his opening remarks, Prof. LIU Gang highlighted the long-standing and productive cooperation between the two institutes. KIMS Director Dr. Chul-Jin Choi echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the shared commitment to deepening collaboration in energy materials research.
Under the theme “Energy Materials”, the workshop featured 11 scientific presentations covering a wide range of frontier topics. Prof. LIU Gang delivered a keynote speech titled “Advanced materials for photocatalytic and electrocatalytic water splitting” outlining IMR’s latest achievements in green hydrogen production. Other IMR researchers also shared their expertise.
These exchanges provided a platform for in-depth discussions and potential collaborative projects between scientists from both sides.
During the visit, the IMR delegation also toured key laboratories and research facilities at KIMS, gaining insights into Korea's materials science infrastructure and experimental platforms.
The IMR-KIMS bilateral workshop is a regular academic event established under the China-Korea intergovernmental science and technology exchange agreement. Since its launch in 2010, six sessions have been successfully held, consistently promoting collaboration and co-innovation in materials science. In May 2025, the two institutes renewed their cooperation agreement during Director Choi’s visit to IMR, laying a stronger foundation for future joint research.
