The Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS), successfully hosted Lee Hsun Young Scholar Forum on Materials Science and Technology from June 12 to 14, 2025.
Themed “Frontier Innovation·Demand-Driven Development”, the forum aimed to foster interdisciplinary exchange and collaboration among young researchers worldwide. It covered a wide range of fields, including materials artificial intelligence, advanced structural materials, energy and information materials, composites, nano-metallic materials, and corrosion and protection technologies.
The event attracted 124 young scholars from universities and research institutions across 25 countries and regions. Among them, 33 were invited to present their research, with total online and offline participation exceeding 11,000.
Academicians LI Yiyi and LI Dianzhong attended the forum, alongside MAO Zhiyuan, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the Shenyang Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. IMR Director Prof. LIU Gang and other institute leaders also participated in the opening ceremony.
In his address, President MAO Zhiyuan highlighted the legacy of Lee Hsun, a pioneering scientist in materials science, and introduced the talent support policies of CAS, Shenyang Branch, Liaoning Province, and Shenyang City. He encouraged young scholars to follow Lee Hsun's example and contribute to addressing social development needs in materials science.
Prof. LIU Gang outlined IMR's development philosophy, emphasizing competitiveness, inclusivity, long-term vision, and growth potential. He also presented the institute's comprehensive support system for young talent, covering fundamental research, applied studies, and engineering applications.
Following the opening ceremony, Prof. SUN Dongming from the Advanced Carbon Materials Division delivered an invited talk on “Exploring New Semiconductor Devices in the Post-Moore Era.” Later, participants visited IMR Science and Technology Exhibition Hall and public research platforms.
The forum featured vibrant academic presentations and poster sessions, where young researchers shared their latest findings and engaged in in-depth discussions with peers and experts. The event provided a valuable platform for academic exchange, collaboration, and mutual learning among the next generation of materials scientists.
