The 7th IMR-KIMS Joint Workshop on Materials Science and Engineering was held at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS), from May 27 to 28, with a 10-member delegation from the Korea Institute of Materials Science (KIMS) visiting IMR for the event.
At the opening ceremony, Prof. CHEN Xingqiu, Secretary of the Party Committee and Deputy Director of IMR, and Dr. Chang-hoon LEE, Deputy Director of KIMS, delivered welcome addresses. Both sides reviewed the long-standing cooperation between the two institutes and the substantial achievements made over the years. They expressed a shared commitment to further expand and deepen scientific exchanges and collaboration, strengthening their mutually beneficial international partnership from a higher starting point.
During the workshop, a total of 14 academic presentations (seven from each side) were delivered, covering cutting-edge topics including heterogeneous catalysis and carbon neutrality, gas sensors and thermal interface materials, nanometallic catalysts, thermal barrier coatings, additive manufacturing, zeolite catalysts, computational design and optimization of titanium alloys, and carbon nanotubes and two-dimensional materials. The presentations showcased the latest research progress from both institutions.
During the visit, the KIMS delegation toured laboratories in the Energy Information Materials and Devices Division, the Materials Surface Engineering Division, the Superalloys Division, the Ceramic Materials Division, the Titanium Alloys Division, and the Advanced Carbon and Two-Dimensional Materials Division, engaging in in-depth discussions with their IMR counterparts.
The IMR-KIMS Joint Workshop is a regular academic activity established under the intergovernmental science and technology exchange agreement between China and Korea. Since its inception in 2010, the workshop has been successfully held seven times, providing a stable and effective platform for enhancing bilateral cooperation in materials science and promoting collaborative innovation. In May 2025, KIMS President Chul-Jin Choi visited IMR, during which the two institutes renewed their cooperation memorandum of understanding, laying a solid foundation for future collaboration. In November 2025, IMR Director Prof. LIU Gang led a delegation to KIMS and co-hosted the 6th IMR-KIMS Joint Workshop in Changwon, Korea.
