Diamond Workshop Successfully Held at IMR

2026-06-22

The Diamond Workshop was held at the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IMR, CAS), from June 11 to 14. The workshop was co-chaired by Prof. LIU Chang and Prof. HUANG Nan from IMR, and Prof. Nianjun Yang from Hasselt University, Belgium. The event brought together renowned experts, young scholars and industry representatives from 24 universities, research institutes and enterprises worldwide, gathering in Shenyang to focus on advanced diamond material preparation technologies and to engage in in-depth academic discussions on frontier applications including semiconductor devices, quantum information, medical technology, and energy and environmental fields, while charting future directions for the field.

Prof. WU Xinqiang, Deputy Director of IMR, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a welcome address. He extended a warm welcome to all participants and introduced IMR’s research landscape in new materials. Prof. Wu expressed his hope that the workshop would serve as a platform for active interaction and exchange, deepening international collaboration and collectively promoting high-quality development in the diamond materials field.

The invited keynote session featured a series of outstanding presentations. Prof. Hiroshi Kawarada from Waseda University analyzed the inversion layer characteristics of hydrogen-terminated diamond surfaces, elucidating their unique electrical properties in wide-bandgap semiconductors. Prof. LIU Bingbing from Jilin University shared her team’s latest achievements in high-pressure synthesis of hexagonal diamond. Prof. Ken Haenen from Hasselt University systematically presented research on germanium and tin vacancy color centers in chemical vapor deposition diamond. Prof. Anmin Nie from Yanshan University, who has long been engaged in the micro-mechanics of superhard materials, analyzed cutting mechanisms from a near-atomic scale. Other distinguished speakers, including Prof. Naoki Komatsu from Kyoto University, Prof. LIU Jinlong from University of Science and Technology Beijing, Prof. YAO Mingguang from Jilin University, Prof. HU Xiaojun from Zhejiang University of Technology, Prof. ZHENG Jialiang from Donghua University, Prof. Quan Li from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Prof. YE Haitao from Fudan University, Prof. LIANG Jianbo from the National Third-Generation Semiconductor Technology Innovation Center (Suzhou), Prof. Meiyong Liao from the National Institute for Materials Science (Japan), and Prof. HUANG Nan from IMR, delivered presentations on original research achievements ranging from nanodiamond biomedical applications, pulse-modulated plasma preparation of high-strength, high-hardness diamond, amorphous sp³ carbon materials, diamond synthesis via graphite phase transition under ambient pressure, nanodiamond drug delivery, operando temperature measurement in electrocatalytic devices using nanodiamonds, diamond surface functionalization, room-temperature semiconductor bonding, diamond MEMS, to novel diamond preparation technologies. The presentations covered both cutting-edge research trends and technical bottlenecks, as well as experience in engineering applications.

The workshop also featured a poster session, where participants engaged in lively exchanges and in-depth discussions in a vibrant academic atmosphere. This workshop established a high-level academic exchange platform for diamond materials research, further enhancing communication and collaboration among domestic and international research teams. It is expected to play an active role in promoting technological innovation, achievement translation and disciplinary development in the diamond field.
