On July 11, during the 22nd General Assembly of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the disciplinary divisions of CAS held academic seminars. A total of 83 scientists, including newly elected academicians of 2025 and recipients of the 2026 Tan Kah Kee Young Scientist Award from six disciplinary divisions, delivered excellent academic presentations on research progress and future directions in various fields.
Prof. PAN Qingsong from the Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, as a recipient of the 2026 Tan Kah Kee Young Scientist Award in Technical Sciences, gave a special academic report entitled "Mechanical Effects of Gradient-Architectured Dislocation Metals" at the meeting. Aiming at the major challenge in materials science that strength and ductility/fatigue resistance are difficult to achieve simultaneously, he proposed a new design concept of cross-scale spatially gradient-architectured dislocation metals, successfully solving the century-old dilemma of trade-off in material properties, achieving a "1+1>2" enhancement in comprehensive mechanical properties including strength, ductility, fatigue strength and fatigue life, and is currently developing next-generation architectured engineering materials and promoting their application verification. Based on these original achievements, Prof. PAN Qingsong was awarded the 2026 Tan Kah Kee Young Scientist Award in Technical Sciences, with the award project titled "Research on Strengthening and Toughening of Architectured Metallic Materials."
