Abstract

When one considers the next generation of microwave integrated circuits (MICs)one envisions the 2-dimensional integration of ferrite control elements (e.g., filters, phase shifters, isolators/circulators, etc.) with semiconductor active components (e.g., signal processing devices and high power and low noise amplifiers)on common substrates. In order to realize such wide scale integration, ferritedevicesmore so than semiconductor devices, must experience reduction in size, weight, profile and cost. Concomitantly, processing protocols that allow the growth of high qualityferriteonsemiconductor substrates must be developed, tested, and optimized for large-scale production.

Here, we explore the design, processing, and characterization of modern microwave ferrites focusing on advances made during the last ten years in the attempt to realize ferrite circuit system integration. Of particular import to weight sensitive platforms, we explore the processing of self-biased ferrite devices on semiconductor material substrates and their wide-scale implementation in MICs.
